Lenny's version of the birth

At our last appointment, Patricia (our OB) told us to come in on Friday the 18th to have some bloodwork evaluated, and possibly to induce Katie for the safety of the baby.

On Thursday evening I crashed(hard) into bed and woke up at 7:00 a.m. to Katie having contractions. Now at this point in the game, contractions are no new thing, and I was not too alarmed by them, except that they were really close together (3.5 to 4 minutes). At this point I was not entirely convinced that the contractions Katie was having were going to be the real contractions that would lead to the cervix opening. I realized that if Katie was going to make it to the appointment, I would have to start getting ready right away, and if the contractions were going to be real, the preparation would be nice anyway. On the way to the hospital, I was completely convinced we were going to the birth center, and not to the OB office.

We arrived at the hospital at 8:30, they monitored Katie and Annahallé for about an hour, and saw that Katie was at 4cm.
We were admitted to Labor and Delivery, where Katie and I stayed until after Anna was born.

The Labor was very intense with little time for Katie to relax in between contractions. At about 11:30 the nurse Krisanne, administered a shot of nubane, which helped Katie to almost sleep between contractions. This was the only time during the labor where I was not holding Katie's hand. I took the opportunity of the nubane, and went to the car to get everything else that we didn't have (CD player, champaign, ...) and to make some phone calls to Katie's mom, my parents, Eric and the guys, and Becky's mom Cynthia.

As the time got closer, I never left Katie's side. Her mom showed up a few minutes, after I called. We did our best to make Katie comfortable, but labor is hardly comfortable. After a while, the contractions still hadn't ruptured the bag of water, so Katie in order to move things along asked to have the membrane ruptured. the contractions got even more intense and progressed more quickly than before.

Shortly after the membranes were ruptured I could see Anna's head as she was starting to come out. I told Katie, but she didn't believe me. As everything got stronger and harder, I could see more of the head. Krisanne told us she was going to call the doctor, and when she came back in she saw that Anna was about to make an arrival and grabbed one of the ob's that were in the hallway to deliver Anna.

At 3:36, Anna's head popped out, I told Katie that her head was out, but she still didn't believe me. with the next contraction, the rest of Anna's body appeared and then all I remember is hearing Katie say, "Oh my baby, oh my baby!".

Anna weighed 8 pounds, 0 oz, 20 inches, and had a light fuzz of blonde hair. She is the new joy of my life.
